How can we create Resilience?
I was so honored to be invited to speak to the Women’s Production Society in my new role as an Executive and Leadership Coach. I’ve known this group for a long time, and it’s incredible to see how they’ve grown in both impact and membership. I was introduced as a “Friend of the Court,” and I have to say—that is exactly how I feel.
When we first discussed potential topics, one immediately stood out: Resilience. What does resilience really mean for us right now? We are living in extraordinary times by any measure. If you’re in Los Angeles or working in the entertainment industry, the uncertainty is even more acute. The ripple effects of strikes, layoffs, industry contractions, the recent devastating fires and an evolving landscape are enough to shake even the most seasoned professionals. Add to that the constant undercurrent of political conflict, environmental crises, and the dismantling of institutions we once relied upon, and it can feel like we’re all being hit from every angle. The problems we face are big.
I knew many of the women in the room, though not all. But what I did know was that they shared key characteristics that make them exceptional Production Executives and Producers: intelligence, capability, competence, an unparalleled work ethic, and an ability to rally large teams toward a common goal. They are action-oriented doers with an immense sense of responsibility. And if they are also managing families, that weight multiplies exponentially.
This led me to a crucial question: Where does taking care of yourself factor in? How do you put on your own oxygen mask so that you can continue to carry on?
When I consider resilience in our current context, I think about this: How do you continue to stand up, day after day, when life keeps delivering body blows? How do you advocate for your own career advancement when just getting through the day already requires more resilience than you feel you have?
Among many things, two truths stand out:
It is critical to deeply know who you are.
It is equally important to be intentional about how you show up in the world.
And if you have to pick just one, start with how you want to show up—because in doing so, the deeper understanding of who you are will be revealed.
During our session, we explored this concept through exercises designed to uncover the feelings we want to embody throughout our days. Some of the words that resonated with the group: impactful, strong, connected, loving, elegant, resourceful, calm, peaceful, resolute.
So, I’ll ask you: How do you want to show up?
Resilience isn’t just about pushing through. It’s about aligning with your core values, setting clear intentions, and ensuring that you are caring for yourself as much as you care for your work and the people around you. When you lead from that place—when you choose how you want to be—you cultivate the kind of resilience that sustains you, rather than drains you.
If this resonates with you, and you’re looking for support in navigating your leadership journey with clarity, confidence, and resilience, I’d love to help. As an Executive and Leadership Coach, I work with professionals who are ready to step into their full potential while maintaining balance and purpose in their lives. Let’s connect and explore how you can lead with strength, intention, and fulfillment.
